A Visit To Gruene Texas

Postby NefariousNed on Tue Sep 09, 2014 6:23 am

Spent the better part of this past afternoon in Gruene, Texas, an historic old village community within New Braunfels.
While I usually hold off going there until I want to wow some out of towners, it's just been too long and I had to get back.

Image
Today, Gruene (pronounced "green") is all about quaint, rustic little shops, unique restaurants, antique malls, B&Bs, "floating the river"
on tubes, rafts and kayaks, a famous music hall, and just plain nice scenery.

Just one of many antique malls in Gruene. I almost managed to come away empty-handed. Almost.

While it's claim to fame is of being the "Oldest Dance Hall in Texas", the historical plaque won't commit to that.

For those of you who have seen the movie "Michael", Gruene Hall doubled as that cowboy bar where John Travolta does his famous dance
routine.

The Gruene water tower. (Sort of looks like one of those Martian walking machines from "War Of The

Another view of that antique mall. That long low building adjoining it is Mozie's Bar. It's bar runs the full length of the structure.

Not just a place for a day-trip, Gruene also has some nice B&Bs and other such extended-stay accommodations, including private cabins.

Chips and Salsa at the Tex-Mex Restaurant. As the salsa was a mite mild, I asked the waiter to bring me the hottest they had.
He complied, bringing me some rather zippy stuff in one of those big soup cups! So as not to let it go to waste, I was forced to
use the chips as a spoon and finished the entire cup. It was a spiritual experience, I tell you.

Had the Gruene enchilada plate, to whit: two shredded chicken enchiladas covered in tomatillo sauce and a dollop of sour cream, Spanish
Rice, refried beans and an avocado salad. (Accompanied, of course, by a "Diet" Dr. Pepper.) :D

An everything Texas store, Gruene General Store has all sorts of local salsas for sale, with free samples. There's also an old-timey candy
counter, plus a Blue Bell Ice Cream counter with those round red nagahide stools.

Cotton-Eyed Joe's is a Texas apparel shop.

Painting inside the antique mall. The caption reads "US Marines raising the flag at Depne, Apr. 27, 1805."
The buildings look more like Tripoli. So, what was this all about?

This was a curiosity. Someone had clipped an old print from a book and had it elaborately framed. The picture is only about 2x4, but the
frame and matte are about 11x14. So, why such a huge frame for a small image? a 5x7 would've sufficed.
