Neat photii of the paintings, Ned. Do they have a goon squad on duty there to swarm anybody trying to use flash when taking pictures?

Or is the place really well lit?

Nope. I just asked if it was okay to take photos and then just snapped away, flash and all. Lighting was horrible, for the most part. The glare you see on some of the photos is from light shining in through the windows. Unless it's a particularly overcast day, you really can't get a decent photo of the McArdle paintings, for all the glare.

(I see that Quincey Morris has not remarked about Sparky, the Wonder Dog yet.)

Ned is right they are pretty lenient there about pictures ... it is an amazing painted journey to go there
to Austin to the state capitol building, and gaze closeup at so many famous paintings & artifacts (such
as the San Jacinto flag displayed above) on display there! One you should make Rick! :o

Great pics, Ned! - It´s nice to be able to study some of the details on McArdle´s paintings, and it´s the first time I see the San Jacinto flag on a photo.
It´s a great portrait of Austin! He looks so "alive" when you look at his eyes.
Thanks, Ned...

Tornado's hit the Capitol,
Blue northers cause such slaughter.
But 'ith my jug, I'm feeling snug,
Bring on yer wind an' water.

Torrential rains, come sweep the plains
An' make the rivers risky.

Got into Austin about 1:00 PM yesterday for the Blondie concert at the Moody Theater on 2nd Street. As the doors to the venue would
not be opening until 6:30 PM, this left me a few hours to explore the town. Really got my walking in (probably 8 miles worth altogether),
as I parked near the highway and then hiked in. Naturally, I headed for the Capitol building and the nearby Governor's mansion, but
there were always sights to see along the way. Weather was tolerable, never exceeding 90 degrees and then fading to cooling high winds
which probably brought it down another 10 degrees. The cloud cover the winds blew in caused all the city lights to go on as early as 4:00 PM.

Emo's on Red River, the first club I ever visited in Austin. It's merely a converted warehouse. When the warehouse district was on it's
way out, may of the buildings were bought and turned into nightclubs, making Austin the "Live Music Capitol" of the Nation.

I photographed this one club just because it had a sort of Alamo hump. Pitiful, isn't it? (I guess you're noticing that every other building
is a tattoo parlour.)

The House Of Representatives chamber in the Capitol at Austin also houses some familiar paintings
that you might recognize from Texas history books.

The Henry McArdle painting of the battle of San Jacinto also in the Senate Chambers in the Capitol.
Had the House and Senate been in session, I would not have been able to photograph any of these
paintings. As it was, the security checkpoint was at the entry doors to the Capitol Building. I had to
pass through a metal detector, just like at the airport. As I'd been walking a good deal, I was limping
due to my bum knee. Noticing this, one of the security personnel called me over, shouting, "Hey you
there, you bin drinking?" In front of a queue of other would-be Capitol visitors, It was slightly humiliating.
